The Story:
For the last two winters we've provided High Ground Brewing with coffee to help transform their "Coal Train" -a Baltic Porter-into the "Coffee Train" (The same beer aged on one of our coffees). This year, instead of just selecting a coffee we were already roasting, High Ground asked us to roast a coffee specifically for this beer and then release the coffee and beer under the same name. It's not uncommon for us to roast coffees optimized for specific brew methods, but optimized for brewing beer was unique opportunity. So, here is our first ever attempt to roast a coffee that would age well with a porter and taste great on its own.
The coffee we chose for the task is our final release from Alejo Castro of Volcan Azul in Costa Rica. This is an H1 Hybrid (our first time roasting this varietal) that is fully washed. The results are a sweet cup with notes of cocoa, lemongrass, black cherry, and brown sugar.
